Curatorial notes
Pieter Bartholomeusz Barbiers created "City with an Old Tower on the Water, with a Woman and a Boy with Two Sheep in the Foreground" without a specified date, using watercolor and ink. Barbiers, working in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, captures a serene scene, but through today’s lens we might consider the economic realities embedded within it. The pastoral image of a woman and child with sheep contrasts with the imposing architecture, possibly alluding to the social hierarchies of the time. The crumbling tower suggests a world in decline, a sentiment that would have resonated in an era of political upheaval and social change. The artwork offers a perspective on labor, gender, and class, inviting us to consider the stories of those often unseen in historical narratives. Barbiers’ work encourages a dialogue between the aesthetic and the socio-political, reflecting on the emotional and personal dimensions of societal issues.
