Joseph Pennell created this etching, “The Obelisk, London,” to capture a scene on the River Thames. Pennell situates Cleopatra's Needle, an ancient Egyptian obelisk, within the urban landscape of London. The image creates meaning through its visual encoding of power and historical association. The obelisk, a symbol of ancient Egyptian civilization, stands juxtaposed against the backdrop of modern London architecture. This juxtaposition invites reflection on the legacy of empires and the transfer of cultural artifacts through colonial practices. Britain acquired the obelisk in 1819, but it only made its way to London in 1878. Today, it continues to stand on the Victoria Embankment. Studying primary sources from the period, such as newspaper accounts and colonial records, can shed light on the social and political context surrounding the acquisition and display of such objects. By exploring the institutional histories of museums and public spaces, we gain a deeper appreciation for the complex relationship between art, power, and cultural identity.
