Klaas (I) Kleiterp captured this small photo of Klaas and Tiny Kleiterp playing with a cart in the Dutch East Indies. I can only imagine that the photograph came into being through a process of trial and error, shifting and emerging through intuition. I sympathize with Klaas, imagining what it might have been like to witness his children in a moment of simple play. Maybe he watched them from a distance, considering the light and composition, and wanting to capture their innocence. The sepia tones give the photograph an aged, warm and almost dreamlike quality. The wheels of the toy cart stand out; they almost seem too complex to be a toy. There is a quiet stillness to the photograph. Photographs like this remind us that artists are always in conversation, exchanging ideas across time, inspiring one another's creativity, and embracing ambiguity.
