This drawing of fowl was created by Jean Bernard using graphite and possibly some red chalk. The use of graphite in this drawing is interesting. It's a material that’s all about capturing subtle gradations, light and shadow. Notice how Bernard has used it to render the texture of the feathers, almost as if you could reach out and touch them. The graphite captures the bird's texture so realistically. The artist has carefully built up the tones to depict the bird’s form and texture. This type of drawing, based on close observation and careful rendering, has a strong connection to the scientific studies of the period. It blurs the line between art and documentation. What’s interesting to me is how the artist’s patient labor translates into a sense of presence. It’s a reminder that the value of art lies not just in the final image, but in the artistic practice, the process, and the materials themselves.
