Curatorial notes
This letter, penned by Georges Lenseigne in Paris, 1916, speaks of a sculptor’s desire to donate a statue of President Krüger to a Dutch museum. The handwritten script, flowing with a unique energy, immediately evokes the past, reminding us of the enduring power of human communication. The act of writing itself, forming words with a pen, becomes a potent gesture. Consider how the hand, the primary tool for creating art, also inscribes these characters, forging a link between artist and viewer. The act of donation is also a motif rich with symbolism. From antiquity to the present, gifting has served as a means of establishing relationships, asserting power, and seeking redemption. Its roots are sunk deep within our subconscious, where it resonates as both a social and deeply personal act. Through the cyclical progression of the handwritten word, a symbol of artistic intention resurfaces. In the simple sharing of an idea, we can trace the evolution of artistic and cultural memory.
