Henk Henriët sketched these two men with berets and a raised glass, using graphite, maybe with a hint of blue crayon on the right beret. I look at this drawing and think: Man, that must have been such a different time, you know? A more innocent time, a time when people just sat around and drank and talked. I mean, look at that light touch, like he's just barely touching the paper. What’s that casualness? I imagine him sitting in a café, quickly capturing what’s in front of him. There is an intimacy to the drawing and with the way the artist is looking. I mean, I look at drawings a lot. It’s like peeking into someone else's process. It’s so generous of artists to leave these traces. I also think of other artists, like Daumier, making images of modern life in the street, quickly and freely. We’re all just working it out together!
