Robert Frank made "Woman with flag--San Francisco" using gelatin silver print and a camera; I can imagine him quickly capturing the scene before it disappeared. Look how the textures and tones play off each other. The woman's knitted shawl and cap contrast with the slick surface of the banner behind her, but both are rendered in this beautiful, silvery grey. The American flag she holds is almost an afterthought, tucked under her arm, while the banner depicting Mother Cabrini dominates the frame. It seems that the picture is not so much about patriotism, but about the immigrant experience and the role of faith in building community. The number '630' scrawled in the upper left corner and again in the lower right adds a layer of informality, reminding me that this image is part of a larger series or project. I think of Walker Evans and his photographs of everyday people during the Depression. Like Evans, Frank elevates the ordinary to something iconic and unforgettable, capturing the spirit of a time and place with honesty and grace.
