Mathilde de Cordoba's Jacqueline captures a young girl adorned with a bonnet, its delicate ribbons framing her face, a symbol laden with socio-historical weight. This head covering, while seemingly innocuous, echoes the veils and wimples of earlier eras, worn by women as markers of status and modesty. Observe how in medieval paintings, the Virgin Mary is often depicted veiled. Yet, here, the veil is supplanted by the bonnet, softened by its association with childhood innocence. In this context, the ribbons serve as an ornamental addition, yet their presence evokes the psychoanalytic pull of adornment and presentation. Ribbons, like the image itself, become part of the perpetual recirculation of symbols, a constant negotiation between past and present. The cyclical return and reimagining of such motifs speak to our collective subconscious.
