This candlestick was crafted in the late 17th to early 18th century by Ludovico Barchi, a humble object intended to hold light. Notice its octagonal base, a shape not merely decorative, but echoing ancient symbolism. Eight sides may recall the eight-pointed stars associated with Ishtar, or Venus, goddesses of light and love. This shape also resonates with the eight directions of the compass, suggesting an all-encompassing presence. Consider how the simple act of lighting a candle—a flame piercing the darkness—is a motif that appears across cultures. The menorah in Judaism, for instance, or the votive candles in Catholic churches; each shares the primal desire to illuminate, both physically and spiritually. This impulse speaks to our collective memory, our innate recognition of light as a force against the unknown. Just as early humans gathered around the fire for warmth and safety, so we continue to seek comfort in the flame, a symbol that dances through time, constantly renewed.
