Curatorial notes

Wilhelm Steinhausen created this illustration, "Diether und die beiden Landstreicher," around 1884 for a deluxe edition of Heinrich Steinhausen's "Irmela. Eine Geschichte aus alter Zeit". Rendered in shades of grey, the composition's somber palette evokes a sense of foreboding. Three figures dominate the scene: one holds a blade, the other leans in to whisper into the ear of the third. The artist uses light and shadow to create a sense of depth and intrigue. The characters are placed within a forest, yet it is the figures themselves that take centre stage. This visual weight invites us to consider the semiotic interplay of gazes, gestures and objects, which together build a story charged with dramatic tension. Steinhausen prompts us to explore the narrative beyond the surface, challenging our assumptions about morality and the stories we tell ourselves.
