Curatorial notes

This is Kōzaburō Tamamura's "View of a Lake in Japan, probably Lake Yunoko near Nikko". Tamamura, active during the Meiji era, captured scenes reflecting Japan's rapid modernization. A burgeoning tourism industry shaped the demand for landscape photography, where the representation of nature carried complex cultural and political significance. Photographers negotiated between tradition and modernity, often crafting idealized images catering to Western expectations while also seeking to define and preserve a sense of Japanese identity. The mirrored surface of the lake in this image invites contemplation, a traditional representation of the serenity of nature. However, the presence of modern photographic technology introduces new perspectives and challenges traditional artistic conventions. Through his lens, Tamamura constructs a space where the natural world and human experience meet. This challenges us to consider the historical and cultural forces shaping our perceptions of place and identity.
