Komori Soseki made this print, "Persimmon and Birds" sometime between 1920 and 1930. I can imagine the artist gently layering the block print, how the artist has captured such a feeling with such simple shapes and colors. Isn't it funny how persimmons can look so vibrant against the cool greens of the leaves and the soft, almost shy, tones of the birds? I wonder if Soseki was trying to capture a particular moment or mood with this piece? I mean, the way those little birds huddle together on the branch—they seem to be sharing some kind of secret. It feels like a glimpse into a quiet, fleeting moment. And I can imagine Soseki being inspired by the bold strokes of someone like Hokusai, but finding his own voice in this more delicate, intimate style. Each print is like a conversation, a back-and-forth across time and space.
