Dupondius of Faustina I
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
Editor: This is a dupondius coin featuring Faustina I. It feels like such a small object, yet it holds a whole empire's worth of history. What symbols stand out to you in this piece? Curator: Look closely. One side bears Faustina’s portrait, evoking power and imperial authority. But consider the other side. Which goddess does she represent? What does she hold? And how might these symbols have resonated with people of that time? Editor: I see a figure holding what looks like a scepter, but I’m not sure which goddess it is. What does that tell us about Faustina’s role or image? Curator: Exactly! The image carries multiple layers of meaning. In representing herself as a goddess, Faustina becomes an enduring symbol of Roman values – and perhaps even becomes deified. Editor: It's amazing how much information and cultural memory is packed into something so small. Thanks for helping me see that!
