Curatorial notes

This is an early photograph of an unknown man, made by Th. u. O. Hofmeister. Photography in this period was as much about chemistry and craft as it was about capturing an image. Early photographic processes like this one involved coating glass plates with light-sensitive emulsions, requiring careful timing and technique in the darkroom. Each print was essentially handmade. The tonal range and depth we see here speak to the photographer's skill in manipulating light and chemicals. Consider the labor involved: from preparing the materials to the final print, each step required expertise. Even as photography became more accessible, it retained a connection to older artisanal traditions. This challenges our conventional ideas about art, reminding us that even in the age of mechanical reproduction, human skill and material understanding remain central.
