This is Johann Theodor de Bry's "Design for a Knife Handle with the Personification of Charity," created sometime in the late 16th to early 17th century. The knife handle design is a study in verticality and the interplay between form and representation. De Bry’s engraving uses a symmetrical composition and a dense array of motifs to draw the eye along the handle's length. The design is richly ornamented with foliage, mythical creatures, and allegorical figures. The depiction of Charity with children embodies the virtue of love and generosity, central to the handle's theme. The organization of space is noteworthy. De Bry uses frames to contain different elements. This separation and containment is a structural technique which invites us to consider how the themes interact. This interplay between surface decoration and deeper symbolic content embodies the era’s fascination with emblematic representation.
