Ree Morton made this sculpture, Beaux Chair, out of mixed media, and I can't help but think about how materials lead to the making of the piece itself. Look at the way she builds up the surface, not trying to hide the construction. It's all part of the story. I’m especially drawn to the juxtaposition of the stiff, boxy structure of the chair against the fluid, draping bow and the rose. The rose, in particular, looks as though it’s been formed from paper, and this adds a delicate, handmade quality to the work. These are clashing elements which cohere to form a visually intriguing dynamic. Morton’s work, like that of Eva Hesse, embraces a kind of playful vulnerability. These artists use materials in ways that feel both provisional and deeply considered, reminding us that art is as much about the process of making as it is about the final product.
