Curatorial notes

This memorial volume, printed in 1873, commemorates the life and ministry of Reverend Francis Muir. On the left page, we see the symbol of the dove, a motif that appears in many cultures across time. The dove, traditionally a symbol of peace, purity, and new beginnings, also plays a crucial role in Christian iconography as an emblem of the Holy Spirit. We can see it in paintings of the Annunciation, for example. This symbol is not confined to religious contexts but appears in secular art as well, representing hope and reconciliation. Consider how this image, especially in times of conflict or mourning, taps into our collective memory, offering solace and the promise of renewal. It’s a non-linear progression, a cyclical return to symbols of hope and renewal, each time imbued with new layers of meaning.
