John Atkinson Grimshaw painted Nearing home with oil on canvas, a very traditional method at the time. The painting is a nocturne, and the smooth application of oil paint allows for subtle gradations of light and shadow that create a misty, moonlit atmosphere. It really draws you in. The surface is built up through layers of glazes. This allows light to penetrate and reflect from the lower layers, enhancing the luminosity of the scene. It is no easy task to do, and shows dedication to his craft. Grimshaw was skilled in capturing the effects of light and atmosphere, but I think what is most captivating is the mood. He invites us to reflect on our own journeys, both literal and metaphorical. This encourages us to reconsider the distinctions between technique, artistic expression, and narrative.
