Václav Zykmund made "Letopisy," this etching, probably in the 1940s. The lines are raw and immediate; you can see the artist thinking through his marks, making this feel like a direct translation of thought. There's this arching darkness looming overhead, like a cave or maybe some kind of gothic ruin. And then, this rain of lines, they evoke a sense of both dread and wonder. It's all about texture, isn't it? The way the ink grabs onto the paper, creating these tiny, unpredictable moments. There's this little crescent shape hanging in the middle, like a moon, that feels so fragile. I’m reminded of Piranesi, who was able to make something epic and deeply psychological out of a simple line. Art is, after all, about how we keep the conversation going. It’s more like a question than an answer.
