Jean-Baptiste Nini created this terracotta medallion, "Portrait of a Man, Anne-Claude-Philippe de Tubières de Grimoard, comte de Caylus," in the 18th century. The profile bust is set against a flat, circular backdrop, encircled by a simple frame. The composition is striking in its geometric clarity: the subject's head and shoulders form a series of curves and lines, sharply contrasted against the smooth ground. Nini masterfully uses the terracotta to create texture, particularly in the intricate curls of the wig. This attention to detail serves not only to depict the individual but also to highlight the artifice and social coding of the era. The portrait's relief challenges the conventional hierarchy between sculpture and painting, questioning their established roles within the artistic discourse of representation and form. It invites ongoing re-interpretation within the context of portraiture and materiality.
