Editor: Here we have Denman Waldo Ross's "Sketch of a Male Head and Torso." It’s a pretty straightforward pencil drawing, but the geometric lines overlaid on the figure give it a strange, almost scientific feel. What do you make of it? Curator: It strikes me as a search for underlying order, a quest to find harmony in the human form. Ross seems to be asking: can we unlock beauty through mathematical precision? Is there a divine geometry inherent in us all, just waiting to be revealed through the artist's hand? Editor: So it's like he's trying to find the perfect proportions? Curator: Precisely! Or perhaps suggesting that the pursuit of perfection, however structured, is itself a worthy artistic endeavor. It makes you wonder, doesn't it, about the hidden structures within ourselves. Editor: It does. I never thought about art and math being so connected.
