Curatorial notes
This is a photograph of the Castle of l'Anglais on Mont-Boron, taken by Eugène Degand. Notice how the fortress is perched high upon the hill, reminiscent of ancient acropolises, citadels of power and culture. This elevation connects it symbolically to the heavens. It's a motif as old as civilization itself, echoing in the hill towns of Italy and the fortified monasteries of Greece. The castle overlooking the land embodies a sense of security and dominion, but also isolation. The image bears an emotional weight, suggesting both the allure and the burden of power, how these symbols resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings in different historical contexts.
