Maria Bozoky made this small watercolor, "Park View," with paper and pigment, and, as you can see, a rather sprightly hand. The park comes into being through washes of color, overlaid and cross-hatched with darker tones to define form, like the upright evergreens, and a majestic, leafless tree. I feel the artist’s delight in making it. The paper seems to be breathing. It’s not overworked, just right. You can feel her, standing there painting *en plein air*, making quick decisions. The scribbled dark lines of ink that define edges and volume seem to me a very personal touch, a kind of interior monologue made visible. She has a similar freedom to Helen Frankenthaler and Joan Mitchell. Painters are in an ongoing conversation, one across time, and another among each other. Painting is a space of imagination where meaning is never quite pinned down, and where feeling is paramount.
