Robert Frank’s photographic contact sheet, Stable opening no number, is like a painter's sketchbook page, a place for experiment and play. The grainy blacks and whites, the varying exposures, the way he layers images – it’s all part of his process, isn’t it? He lets the material speak. The texture is so raw, like you could touch the emulsion. Look at the strip of images that have been turned upside down, full of abstract shapes, and compare it with the other strips, full of people in galleries. They all belong together. Frank reminds me of other photographers like Garry Winogrand, or Diane Arbus, other artists who are out in the world, responding to it with their guts. Each image is a little moment of discovery, a conversation between the artist and the world. It is a reminder that art is not about perfection; it’s about feeling, seeing, and being present.
