Charles Caseau made this lovely Jug, most likely in the mid twentieth century, using what looks like watercolour and pencil. The colour palette is very limited, dominated by earthy greys and blues. I love the texture Caseau has created, especially on the jug itself. It’s got this mottled, almost distressed quality, like it's been aged by time. You can really see the layering of the watercolour to create a sense of depth and volume, especially around the base. Look closely, and you'll notice small specks and variations in tone that give it a handmade, organic feel. And then there's that bright blue bird—it pops right out! It's a simple design, but the contrast with the muted jug is really effective. The whole piece reminds me a little of Giorgio Morandi’s still life paintings. Not in style, but in its quiet contemplation of everyday objects. Both artists find beauty in the mundane. Caseau really invites us to slow down and appreciate the simple things, and the story they tell.
