This "Chair" drawing was made by Edward Jewett with, it looks like, pencil and watercolor. What's cool is how he builds up the form of the chair through these very precise lines and subtle washes. You can see the grain of the wood, which is amazing. There's something so tender in the way the color is applied – thin, transparent layers that let the paper breathe. Look at the way the light catches the edges, how the shadows define the shape without being heavy. I wonder what kind of brush Jewett used. It reminds me a bit of some of Agnes Martin's quieter pieces, where the grid becomes a space for contemplation, and form becomes something that emerges gradually through the act of making. It's about the beauty of the everyday, the way simple things can hold so much depth if we take the time to really look.
