George Bellows made this painting called, Excavation at Night, and to me, it's like he made it with big scoops of light and dark. I can imagine Bellows out there, late at night, trying to capture how the city transforms, and how the artificial lights cast shadows and pick out detail. It's a dance between what's hidden and what’s revealed. What was he thinking when he painted those strong contrasts? There’s something urgent in those strokes, like he's trying to record the fleeting energy of the night. Think of those big marks of white and gray— they’re not just describing a place. They’re creating a mood, a sense of drama, that you can see in the paintings of other artists who painted New York, like the Ashcan school painters. Each one is adding to a conversation about how we see and feel the city. It's not just about what the world looks like but about how it feels to be there.
