Curatorial notes
This photograph by F. van Zalm captures two young women, probably in Amsterdam, with an immediate, engaging presence. The sepia tone lends it a timeless quality, but it's the details that grab me. Look at the way the light catches the hoop earring on the right, making it gleam against the soft focus. And the necklaces, so individual, hinting at personal stories we can only imagine. The composition is so simple, but the gaze of the subjects is strong. I see echoes of early portrait photography, like Julia Margaret Cameron's work, but with a more direct, less romanticized approach. There's a realness here. Van Zalm isn't trying to make them into symbols. Instead, they exist as individuals. It’s a reminder that even in a carefully posed portrait, the subject’s own presence always shines through.
