Carlo Carra made "Ritmi di oggetti" with oil on canvas sometime in the early 20th century. Looking at the criss-cross of brushstrokes, the ochre yellows, the blues, and the blacks, it is like the painting has been built up, bit by bit, with a kind of intuitive geometry, a rhythm of objects emerging slowly, and then captured. I can imagine Carra in his studio, juggling ideas of Cubism and Futurism, trying to forge his own language. This isn't just about depicting objects; it is like he is trying to capture the very essence of objects—their energy, their movement, their place in the world. Notice the network of lines and shapes—like the ghost of an image, the memory of something seen, broken up, and reassembled. And there is a red shape on the left side, like a stain. It's as if Carra is thinking and working through the history of painting, acknowledging the past while pushing into something new. It reminds me of Picasso’s early cubist work, but Carra gives it his own distinct Italian twist. These guys were all in conversation.
