This group portrait of seven women was made by Cornelis Leenheer Jr. In this image, the interplay of light and shadow is striking, creating a textured surface that draws you in. The photograph is sepia toned, heightening the sense of nostalgia that envelops the piece. Look at the woman in the centre, she has the most striking hat, casting a shadow on her face and drawing your attention. Her stern face, surrounded by the softer faces of the other women gives a sense of the contrast in personalities that makes this image so interesting. Photographs are not often thought of as having much in the way of marks, but in this image you see where the artist has intervened to give it clarity. It is this conversation between intention and accident that makes art so fascinating. Ultimately, it's about embracing the unexpected and finding beauty in the imperfections, much like the work of Lisette Model, who captured the raw energy of street life. There is no right or wrong way to look at art, just different perspectives.
