This anonymous photograph shows some completed buildings in a complex. It's hard to date but, looking at the sepia tones, it feels like early photography. There is a wonderful quality to the surface. It’s so descriptive; you can almost feel the heat rising from the dry earth, and the cool dark interior of the buildings. The light is evenly spread, but the anonymous artist still achieves real depth, mainly using tone and detail to suggest texture. If you look closely at the palm trees in the background, you can see the soft-focus effect, and the contrast with the sharp lines of the buildings in the foreground. I like the way the artist has captured the sense of place, as much as the buildings themselves. The work reminds me a little of Atget, especially the way he captures the atmosphere of a place through his meticulous observation and attention to detail. Art is always in conversation with itself, and this piece embodies that. It's about looking, feeling, and knowing that the meaning is always in the making.
