This silver medal, ‘Stad Augsburg,’ was created by Sebastian Dadler. Its circular form immediately brings to mind the cyclical nature of time and history. The city of Augsburg is meticulously depicted, its skyline a dense array of towers and spires. Above the city, a cluster of celestial figures floats, suggesting divine protection or oversight. On the reverse, a Madonna and Child are shown, framed by Latin inscriptions, which speak to harmony and growth, perhaps intended to be a symbolic representation of the city’s virtues and aspirations. The dense composition and shallow relief create a sense of depth, while the use of light and shadow defines the forms and adds volume to the figures and architectural details. The inscriptions that encircle both sides of the medal act as a frame, reinforcing the medal’s function as a container of meaning. This medal serves as a kind of symbolic map, blending the earthly with the divine.
