This photograph of a flooded street in Paris, with the Tour de l'Horloge in the background, was made by G. Dangereux. The almost monochrome color palette used here really pulls you into the feeling of the moment, and speaks to an intuitive and process-oriented understanding of photography. I’m really drawn to the way the surface of the water reflects the light, giving it almost as much detail as the buildings lining the street. Look at the lower right corner of the image. The textures are particularly interesting. Notice the way Dangereux captured the light reflecting off the water, the subtle tonal variations creating depth and movement. It reminds me a little of Gerhard Richter's blurred photos that feel very painterly despite themselves. This image opens up a space of imagination for me. It invites reflections on time, history, and the ever-changing relationship between humans and their environment. Art is like that, an ongoing conversation.
