This photograph shows the Niederwalddenkmal, a monument near Bingen. Towering above the landscape, the monument features Germania, a figure embodying the German nation. She holds a crown aloft, a symbol of victory and imperial power deeply rooted in ancient Roman iconography where laurel wreaths crowned triumphant leaders. The figure of Germania evokes the Roman goddess Victoria, often depicted with wings and holding a laurel wreath or palm branch. We see echoes of Victoria in countless artworks throughout history.
