Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis made "Creation of the World XI" with tempera on paper. I can imagine the artist’s hand moving here, tentatively. I can feel him trying to materialize the immaterial in pale lilac, grey and beige hues. There is an overall sense of emerging forms as if from the depths of some cosmic soup. Look closely at those vertical strokes of muted colors. Some are tentative, others more assertive, building to something resembling gothic skyscrapers in the foreground. The paint is applied in thin layers, almost like watercolor, allowing the light to pass through and creating a luminous, ethereal effect. The floating harp-like forms are especially evocative. Did Ciurlionis intend to suggest a connection between music and the cosmos? His paintings feel like music, an art form which is also intangible. You sense that Ciurlionis was interested in something bigger than himself, and bigger than this world. His work feels like an invitation, a portal to an inner space where we can explore our own creative potential. What do you think?
