Sigmund Ferdinand Ritter von Perger made this artwork, “Hero in Armor among Villagers,” depicting figures using pen and gray ink. Perger was working in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a time when the ideals of the Enlightenment were giving way to the rise of Romanticism and nationalism. Here, we see a tension between social classes, as the armored hero stands separate from the villagers. The villagers, dressed in simple clothing, gather with expressions of awe and supplication. Meanwhile, the hero, in gleaming armor, appears stoic and detached. The piece raises questions about the role of the hero. Is he a protector, or an oppressor? Are the villagers offering genuine respect, or are they acting out of fear? These are questions Perger leaves us to consider.
