This photograph portrays King Gustaf V of Sweden, but we don’t know when it was taken or by whom. I’m curious about why this portrait was made. The King is standing at the bottom of some steps, leaning on a cane and wearing a light-colored suit and hat, as if he’s just about to head out for a leisurely afternoon stroll. You can see the softness of the light, the textures of the clothing, the subtle gradations of tone that capture the King's likeness. It’s a tender depiction, and he looks pretty pleased with himself if you ask me. I’d guess this photograph was meant to convey a particular image of the King to his subjects. The King’s expression is both formal and intimate, as if he wants to come across as both dignified and approachable. Photographs have always been about propaganda, whether for corporations or individuals. By showing us his best side, and giving us something to aspire to, the King might be subtly telling us how we should behave too.
