Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this design for a plate at an unknown date with watercolour on paper. I love the way the blues and blacks create such a calm and serene feel, it reminds me of staring into a dark night sky full of stars. The grid underneath it all shows the working, the calculation, the back and forth in trying to work something out. There is something very immediate and fresh about the watercolors, you can imagine how quickly the artist would have to work before the washes began to dry. The central flower-like shape pulls your eye into the center. It's a great example of how artists like Cachet, and even someone like William Morris, took inspiration from nature but used it to create something totally new. I can see this design on a plate and equally as an architectural detail. It feels very contemporary too.
