This punch goblet and accompanying glasses were produced by the Cristalleries de Baccarat, one of the most important glass manufacturers in France. A close look reveals the many processes involved in the making of this object, starting with the creation of molten glass, blown and shaped into the desired forms. The cobalt blue color was achieved by adding metallic oxides to the glass mixture, resulting in a striking hue. Then, through skillful cutting, engraving, and enameling, Baccarat artisans added intricate details and classical scenes. These included gods and goddesses, floral motifs, and geometric patterns. Consider the amount of work involved in making each element of this set. This was a costly, specialized product intended for a wealthy clientele. Objects like these blur the line between art and craft. They invite us to appreciate the knowledge, skill, and labor required to create beautiful and functional objects.
