Editor: This is Robert Nanteuil’s portrait of François de La Mothe Le Vayer. I’m immediately drawn to the textures created in the engraving. What can you tell me about the material and process involved here? Curator: Considering Nanteuil’s engravings, we must look at the socio-economic conditions for printmaking. This portrait, with its minute detail achieved through careful labor, was intended for a specific, elite market. How does understanding the means of production affect your interpretation? Editor: I see what you mean. Knowing it was intended for the elite changes how I view the subject's clothing and presentation. Curator: Exactly. We move beyond simply admiring the skill and consider the economic and social forces that shaped its creation and reception. Editor: This really opens up a new perspective. Thanks!
