Johan Hendrik Weissenbruch made this watercolor view of a church near Noorden. The hazy atmosphere, captured with fluid strokes of diluted pigment, speaks to the artist's careful observation of the Dutch landscape. Watercolors demand a certain dexterity. Mistakes are difficult to correct, requiring the artist to plan and execute their vision with precision. Weissenbruch's skillful handling of the medium allows him to create a sense of depth and atmosphere, evoking the vastness of the Dutch landscape. Watercolors, while seemingly simple, require an understanding of pigment properties, paper absorbency, and brush control. It is a medium often associated with spontaneity and immediacy. The portability of watercolors allowed artists to capture fleeting moments and landscapes en plein air. In focusing on the material qualities and the process involved in the art making, we gain a deeper appreciation for the skill, labor, and artistic vision required to create this evocative scene.

This modest 19th-century church at Noordse Dorp seems about to be swallowed up by the overabundant water of the lakes and the huge looming clouds. Weissenbruch’s watercolours often lay around in his studio for years before the artist decided to take another look and finish them. This landscape, with its rough, aged surface, seems also to have been the result of several revisions.
