Editor: Here we have an X-radiograph of "Portrait of a Little Girl" by Cornelis Vos. It’s quite unusual to see a painting rendered this way. What does it tell us? Curator: The x-ray reveals the artist's process. We see the underlayers, the buildup of paint, and structural supports. The history of making and materiality is literally laid bare. Where was this painting made, and by whom? Editor: I don't know the specifics in this case, but I suppose this x-ray gives us insight into the labor and resources that went into creating the work. Curator: Exactly. It redirects our focus from the finished image to the act of creation, its economic context, and the very physicality of the materials. Editor: That’s fascinating, I had not thought of it that way.
