Jean d'Ylen created this advertisement poster for Rhum Charleston Bordeaux, using printmaking techniques. The colour palette is so warm and inviting, the artist uses a range of yellows and reds that are carefully balanced to create an image that draws you in. I find it so fascinating how printmakers are able to create such depth with blocks of flat colour. Just look at how the red stripes on the sleeves and hat add definition and texture to the piece. The figure is posed jauntily, with a confident expression that invites us to enjoy life, to partake in the pleasure of a drink. The whole image sings of art deco, of Toulouse Lautrec, and speaks to the ongoing conversation that exists between commercial art and the fine arts. I find there is a certain ambiguity to the piece, but that's what makes it so engaging. It could be seen in different ways depending on your mood.
