What grabs your attention when you first look at this work? Editor: It's definitely the contrast between the almost clinical depiction of the pigs and the really forceful, emotional text surrounding them. I’m curious about the arrangement of these elements. How do you interpret this work solely based on its formal qualities? Curator: Notice the composition first. We see two distinct blocks of information, the images and the text. On the left we have pigs A, B, C looking quite bestial, quite wild almost. On the right we have D, E, F and these are much more bulbous and amorphous, but all of them rendered in this stark black ink, aren’t they? There's a clear progression and formal tension at play. Do you see that, too? Editor: Yes, that contrast is very clear, how the pigs’ form evolves. The left pigs look more feral. So you think this structure tells us something about the work's overall meaning, how Coe guides our eyes and directs our reading of the image? Curator: Absolutely. Consider also the density of the text. How does the almost aggressive quality of its presentation – all caps, dense paragraphs – contribute to the piece's impact? It contrasts with the simplicity of the line drawings. What effect does that create for you? Editor: It creates a sense of urgency and warning, and also information, like labels or even instructions of some kind, for the images above.
