This drawing of a candlestick was made by an anonymous artist, with what looks like graphite or maybe a soft colour pencil. It's all about subtle gradations, a real dedication to tone and form, which I love. Look at how the artist has built up the structure, starting with the base, a simple square, moving up through the column, fluted with delicate lines, each one suggesting a slight shift in the fall of light. The colour is so pale, almost monochromatic, but it feels incredibly rich. See the top, a flower almost, the curves softly rendered, giving it an ethereal quality. It reminds me of some of Giorgio Morandi's still lifes, a similar obsession with simple objects, explored with such tenderness and care. It's a reminder that art isn't about grand gestures, but about paying attention, seeing the beauty in the everyday, and letting the process guide you.
