This is a woodcut titled 'Salomo bidt om wijsheid' or 'Solomon prays for wisdom' created by Christoffel van Sichem II. Note how the image is structured by contrasts. Solid black lines define form against a stark white background. The composition is dominated by a strict linear perspective as seen in the orthogonal lines of the tiled floor which meet at a vanishing point beyond the picture plane. The geometric rigour of the floor contrasts with the rounded forms such as the archway and the curves of the seven-branched candelabra which stands before Solomon, highlighting the interplay between divine grace and rational order. Solomon is kneeling, head bowed in prayer, his crown signifying earthly authority. The image operates within a symbolic framework where wisdom, prayer, and kingship are interconnected themes. The contrast between the architectural background and the organic shape of the candelabra also signifies the tension between the man-made world and the divine or spiritual realm. The stark lines and forms serve as a visual language encoding moral and spiritual meanings. The interplay of lines, shapes and forms invites us to consider how such visual systems construct and communicate meaning.
