George V. Vezolles made this drawing of a "Table (Dining?)" using watercolour or gouache. The colour palette is limited, grounded in earthy browns and reds which feels like the artist is trying to describe the object in front of him, rather than create a mood. There's an interesting flatness to the image as a whole, even though there are some shadows cast, like under the table, the overall effect is more diagrammatic than illusionistic. The texture of the paper shows through, which makes the piece feel fragile and immediate. Look closely at the legs. Notice how each has been carefully delineated with darker tones to give form and definition, like a careful rendering. The signature in the corner reminds me of the work of Joseph Yoakum. It is tentative, in the same way as his, but full of character. Ultimately this drawing offers a quiet moment of contemplation. It shows us that art is about seeing and recording the world around us.
