Vajda Lajos made "Indian Head" in 1940, and just imagining the pen scratching over the surface of the paper gives me the shivers! I’m really feeling the artist here, his hand must have been moving so fast, those lines are just vibrating off the paper. The marks build up this really compelling, kind of terrifying, but very energized face. I wonder what Vajda was thinking? It's like the drawing is almost breathing. What do you think the material aspects of this work are saying? Do you think this work speaks to the relationship between external and internal worlds? I like to imagine all artists are in an ongoing conversation.
