Carlos Cruz-Diez made Physichromie No. 326, using strips of color placed close together, almost like the warp on a loom. I imagine Cruz-Diez relishing the interplay of color and perception; each panel shifts as you move, like a mirage. He's playing with how our eyes blend colors, creating something that feels both precise and alive. Cruz-Diez worked with color like Josef Albers or Bridget Riley, but he went further by making color almost tangible. Instead of blending colors on the canvas, he built them up in layers so that you could walk around it and see the different hues. He wasn’t painting pictures. He was trying to create an experience. Ultimately, it's a testament to how artists are constantly pushing boundaries, finding new ways for us to see and feel the world around us. It's a reminder that painting isn't just about what's on the canvas, but what happens in our minds when we look at it.
