Editor: Today we’re looking at Al Curry's "Sternpiece - Eagle," made around 1937. It’s a watercolor and colored pencil drawing on paper. What strikes me first is the almost muted color palette; it gives a very vintage feel to a traditionally powerful symbol. What do you make of this, viewed purely through a formal lens? Curator: The power of this work resides foremost in its symmetrical organization, wouldn’t you agree? Observe how the eagle's wings spread out to occupy much of the frame, thus generating stability. Notice that this form of radial balance immediately brings harmony and grandeur, despite the earthy tones you aptly noted. Do you observe any other intrinsic qualities that stand out in terms of its composition? Editor: Yes, the shield adds another layer. Its hard lines and flat surface contrast beautifully with the feathered texture of the eagle itself. How do these choices play into your reading of the piece? Curator: The semiotic structure becomes richer with this element. The shield presents as a deliberate, imposed form juxtaposed with the representational portrayal of the eagle, whose texture results from many fine marks of pigment layered in such a way as to evoke natural plumage. The overall aesthetic arises less from natural observation and more from symbolic geometry. Editor: That contrast between geometric form and natural form provides a much deeper layer to the symbolism than I initially realized! Thanks for helping me to see that. Curator: Indeed, by examining intrinsic structures and signifiers within, one gains deeper appreciation of its intended meaning and how the chosen media work together.
